Migrants in Paris

Campaign design and animation

Chagall, Picasso, Mondrian and Others: Migrant Artists in Paris is an Exhibition about Chagall, Picasso, Mondrian and a number of other known and lesser-known immigrants artists in Paris in the years 1900-1950.

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam asked us to help them with the identity and promotional assets for the exhibition. We created a collage-based style that ties all the assets together to form a unified identity for the exhibition and its online promotion.

The poster for the exhibition shows Marc Chagall's famous Self-Portrait with Seven Fingers, made in 1913. It shows him painting his hometown Vitebks, while in the background the Eiffel tower is clearly visible. It is one of the painter's first experiments with cubism.

In these ways, the painting touches upon many of the themes of the exhibition: the relation between country and identity of the artists of that time - many of whom were immigrants. These artists flocked to Paris, where they found a new and exciting home: The city was a breeding ground for artistic experiment. The relation with their new home-country was however not always easy, which was further intensified by the historical events of the period.

The design of the poster refers to these themes. We use a rough and textured collage style with hard angles - referring to the toughness of the period. In the background the red and blue of France are clearly visible.

Exhibition film

Besides the poster we created a short film that uses a combination of collage animation and historical footage to offer an overview of the most important events of the period, and the relation with artists and their art. The film was shown to visitors when entering the exhibition. We were allowed to use Stravinsky's Petrouchka, recorded by the Concertgebouworkest, as a counterpart to the visuals. We added subtle sounddesign when needed.

Exhibition trailer

We also produced the digital assets needed to promote the exhibition. This included a trailer for the exhibition, designed and animated in the same gritty, textured style. Next to that, various other digital assets were produced, including various variants of the trailer, banners and other digital formats.
